Portuguese annual vehicle circulation tax (IUC)
Portugal · Imposto Único de Circulação (IUC)
Bank or ATM receipt immediately; the payment shows as paid on Portal das Finanças usually within 1–3 working days
What the report shows
Annual tax owed by the registered owner of every vehicle registered in Portugal, paid each year for the month of the registration anniversary. If unpaid it accrues late-payment interest and a fine and becomes a tax debt enforced by the Tax Authority.
Who needs it
car owners living abroad, Israelis and other foreigners with a car in Portugal, companies with fleets, heirs of vehicles, rental companies
Why people order it
pay before the monthly deadline, clear missed IUC years before selling or transferring a car, pay for a relative abroad, settle a tax-debt notice
Legal limits
Anyone may pay a tax payment reference for another person. Joy must not ask for or use the client's Portal das Finanças password; the client issues the payment document. Paying 'Pagamentos ao Estado' references needs a Portuguese bank account with homebanking or a Multibanco card.

Questions and answers
How do I get Portuguese annual vehicle circulation tax (IUC)?
Only the person concerned can obtain it, directly from Tax and Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira, AT). Portal das Finanças → Iniciar Sessão (owner's NIF + password or Chave Móvel Digital) → search 'IUC' → current-year IUC payment option → select the vehicle → issue the payment document (Documento de Cobrança) → the PDF shows the payment reference, amount and due date. The operator pays that reference; the operator never logs in with the client's password.
